Policy Conference 2007 - Chair's statement

Policy Conference 2007 was a great success for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans membership of the union. Our Community's rights have come on in leaps and bounds under the Labour Government (with encouragement from the European Community), though gaps remain.

Peter Tatchell had identified these gaps about 2 years ago and published a list of 10 main points, to which activists in three Amicus regions came up with additional points. These formed the basis of the first draft of the LGBT Rights Charter back in May 2006.

With the process taking just over a year from the Charter being proposed at Regional level, one point had been acheived prior to the Conference in June 2007, namely legislation covering the provision of goods and services for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people.

The government has not yet extended those provisions to our Trans sisters and brothers so the Charter - very necessarily so - still commits the Amicus Section of Unite to campaigning for the Trans community's inclusion.

The Charter lays down some markers to go beyond the Equality Agenda. Some of its points address issues of Liberty. Not only would acheivement benefit Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals, but Heterosexuals too.

Sexual and Gender Liberty should be our aim for all members of society.

Adam Umney, Chair of the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Committee of Unite (Amicus Section), July 5, 2007.
