Conference success for LGBT members

The amicus Policy and Rules Conference took place in Brighton from May 14 to May 18 2005. A number of motions were discussed and successfully passed, which amend the Union's policies and Rule Book to the benefit of LGBT members.

The motions in question were as follows:

Rule Amendment A21 amending Rule 16

This rule amendment was submitted by the 2004 National LGBT Conference. It introduces into Rule:

  • An extra delegate to the National LGBT Committee from each of the three largest regions
  • An extra two delegates to the National LGBT Conference from each of the three largest regions
  • A Regional LGBT Committee of up to 12 members, meeting four times a year
  • Participants no longer need to be representatives, which benefits LGBT members who may not be out at work

This rule also has a similar effect on the other Equalities structures - for Young, Disabled and Black & Ethnic Minority members.

Equal Opportunities (Composite 12)

This composite motion included a motion submitted by the National LGBT Conference.

Highlights include:

  • Consulting with all the equalities groups for mainstreaming of equality issues in all aspect of policies and services
  • Monitoring of all aspects of the Union's activities to ensure equalities issues are being considered
  • The National Executive Committee is to present a formal report on an annual basis

Equal Rights Legislation (Composite 11)

amicus adopted a policy of campaigning for the proposed Single Equalities Commission to:

  • Have separate sections relating to each discriminated group. These should have specifically trained officers, an equal voice and specific funding
  • Be given a combined budget greater than for each of the existing organisations e.g. CRE, DRC
  • Be able to instigate formal investigations to enforce the law and support legal cases

In addition amicus will lobby for legislation for equal pay audits.
