For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans members of Unite (Amicus Section)[jump to menu]

Conference success for LGBT members (again!)

photo of the conference platformThe final Policy Conference of Amicus, now the Amicus Section of Unite, took place in Bournemouth from June 18 to 20. A number of motions were discussed and successfully passed, which amend the Union's policies to the benefit of LGBT members.

The motions in question were as follows:

Motion 163 - Charter of LGBT Rights

The Charter sets out a range of areas where the Union will campaign for improvements to eliminate much of the remaining discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans people. It is without doubt one of the most extensive and ambitious LGBT-related policy motions in recent years, and was passed overwhelmingly.

Credit is due to all of our activists who got the motion onto the agenda of Conference. However, it would not have been passed without the support of all the delegates, who voted in favour with only a handful of delegates opposing it.

Motion 164 - Partnership Rights

This motion called on the NEC and Joint General Secretary to campaign for partnership rights in the Republic of Ireland, on a par with those in Britain and the north of Ireland.

As with the charter it was approved overwhelmingly.

Few members have the privilege of representing their colleagues at Conference and it is another demonstration, if one were needed, of the role of the LGBT networks in MSF, Unifi, GPMU, Amicus, and now Unite, in encouraging and empowering LGBT members to take an active role in their Union. A prime example was the warm applause given to Lesley Mansell, one of the founders of Lagim, the MSF LGBT network, when delegates were reminded that she has the distinction of being the only Amicus member (during the existence of Amicus as a union in its own right) to have received the TUC Gold Badge of Congress, for her work on Women's and LGBT issues.
