[Note: amicus Conference passed the following amendment on Monday 16 May 2005. The following leaflet had been circulated to all delegates outside the Conference Centre, before the vote took place.] Conference Delegates! Support Rule Amendment A21, and give the Equalities Groups an accountable and democratic structure! The current amicus Rule 15 allows for Regional Equalities Forums to elect delegates to their Regional Council and National Equalities Conferences and from there to National Equalities Committees, then for two years these delegates are not held reponsible to anyone. We need elected Regional Equalities Committees to mandate and receive reports from those delegates and to co-ordinate their Region's equality work. The current arrangement for election of the National Committees does not give any guarantee of regional representation. This is not acceptable. We are more likely to have an active Equality structure if we do not limit the participants to representatives. It goes without saying that there are likely to be a minority of our members in Representative positions within the equalities structures, especially Young Members and Black Members (evident from most workplace representative meetings) and LGBT (who may not wish to be «out» at work). Let any employed member be eligible. If this Rule Change is accepted it will encompass the spirit of the other three Equalities Rule Changes A22, A23 and A24, which should then fall. Please support the Rule Change A21 with or without the amendment.Do not support having it remitted to the NEC. |
